priorities first. have an interest, have an opinion.
feel something, and have the capacity to share it with those that care, with those that may be able to and are willing to help you.
know your collaborators. for example, what do they like to eat for breakfast, for a snack? do they prefer to walk in the sunlight or under the eaves of the business awnings? what do they find touching, sad, funny, alarming, or taboo.
find the strength to engage people without frightening them. be honest in the approach, but also have answers to questions. make choices and decisions not solely pros & cons lists.
seek out your like-minded fellows and ladies, and never let them off the hook or let them go. everyone is out there for you, and they're all waiting to see what happens next.
